My Top Ten Most Influential Books

After reading Roger Olson’s post about his top ten favorite theology books, I’ve been thinking about the top ten most influential books on my thinking (outside the Bible). So, here there are, in no particular order, the top ten books that have changed my life:

  • The Apostolic Fathers, ed. Michael Holmes (especially 1 Clement, Didache, and the Epistles of Ignatius)
  • Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture, Frances Young
  • The Spirit of Early Christian Thought, Robert Louis Wilken
  • History and Spirit, Henri de Lubac
  • The Five Theological Orations, Gregory of Nazianzus
  • Liturgical Theology, Simon Chan
  • The Vindication of Tradition, Jaroslav Pelikan
  • The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis
  • Heretics, G. K. Chesterton
  • God and Rationality/Theological Science, T. F. Torrance (okay, that’s two, but I had to get them both in there)
