On the Re-Defining of Terms in the Early Church

I just finished reading a section in Dragon’s Wine and Angel’s Bread: The Teaching of Evagrius Ponticus on Anger and Meekness by Fr. Gabriel Bunge, OSB (which is fantastic so far) and I was reminded of the re-defining of terms in light of the the teachings of the Church. While there are always exceptions, I have concluded that the early Christian writers took classical philosophical terms into the back alley and beat the living snot out of them until they were no longer recognizable. Our interpretation and assessment of their teaching, then, should reflect this fact.
